20/01/18: MNS Miri lauds council’s new initiative in tackling beach pollution

MIRI: The deployment of a ‘beach comber’ by the Miri City Council (MCC) to clean up the beaches here has received praise from the local branch of Malaysian Nature Society (MNS).

According to MNS Miri chairman Iqbal Abdollah, MCC deserves the kudos for its move to solve the pollution issues threatening the beach areas here.

“The machinery, of the ‘Barber Beach Rake’ brand, is  widely used around the world, and is known as the most preferred commercial beach-cleaning machinery.

“Known for its clean-up coverage of up to nine acres an hour, the machinery only requires one driver. It provides fast, safe and efficient beach cleaning,” he said in a statement yesterday.

On Thursday, Miri mayor Adam Yii introduced the ‘beach comber’, which would be operating once a week at four beaches here on rotational basis.

Nevertheless, Iqbal insisted that even with the help of the very efficient machinery, the onus would still be upon every Mirian to keep the beaches here ‘100 per cent clean’.

“MCC has offered the first-class facility used in over 90 countries (to clean up beaches). MNS Miri also hopes that the people would have the right mentality when it comes to keeping our beaches clean.

“MNS Miri also encourages more beach-cleaning activities to be conducted voluntarily, even with the availability of the machinery,” said Iqbal.
