01/09/23: An Evanston Minute: The beachcomber - evanston roundtable

Monday will be the last day this year that Evanston’s beaches are raked and cleaned. The beach season closes on Labor Day, which also puts an end to the ritual of sweeping the city’s five bathing beaches. Chris Jackson, of Evanston’s public works agency, operates the machine – called a surf rake– that removes debris and levels the sand. He’s worked the beaches for 28 years, starting most days at 3 a.m. and finishing eight hours later. “Every morning, I stop to look at the sunrise and take a picture.”
